Just to let you know: in order to get connected to my AP using the rt2500(pci) driver, I had to add ifconfig ra0 up and the mac address of the AP. So, currently, the corresponding section of /etc/networking/interfaces is:

linux-2.6.24 : recompiling debian ... Posté par Jean-Damien Durand

So, finally I decided not to take the zen patchset and start from debian's linux kernel. Here is how I did it (note that I did that as root, thus no fakeroot but still a make xconfig):
apt-get install linux-source-2.6.24 Please note that I explicitely left unchecked the ralink that is in the mainline tarball. Instead I built all the ralink modules family using the cvs snapshots that are at the rt2x00 download page. On one of my desktop I need rt2570 module, and oh well, it works. Hibernation as well. I'll try on another desktop, that needs rt2500pci. Packages has been uploaded to: deb http://jeandamiendurand.free.fr/debian/kernel sid main If you are going to use uvesa graphic driver, then you must also install the v86d userspace helper. You can take it from here: ## v86d executable The "uname -a" output is now: Linux jddhome01 2.6.24 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 5 21:21:52 CET 2008 i686 GNU/Linux My full .config is here. Wouaouh, the linux kernel 2.6.24 is out. I gave it a try, together with the zen-sources but, bad luck since a long time with linux kernel, the version of rt2x00 that is now in the mainline is somewhat buggy. Indeed, even if I do not mind seeing my good old ra0 device between moved to two devices: wmaster0 and wlan0 (after changing /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules, otherwise you get a wlan0_renamed device!), I never manager to associate to my AP!
So I will give it another try, sure, but I will not compile rt2x00 family that is in the official tarball. Crossing fingers. EDIT: ahem, just easy as quoted here Jeudi, 1 novembre 2007

Waiting for a mature kamikaze patchset, I guess the version kamikaze5 is a good candidate. And its name, vipernicus, reminded to all of us very good time with the so-called viper patchsets!
So here we go, I have compiled it, uvesafb+smp+preemptible, enabled almsot eveyrthing except paravirtualization (did not compile on my box !?), and is available for i686 only, but with its source, here: deb http://jeandamiendurand.free.fr/debian/kernel sid main There are also nvidia, ndiswrapper and a recent rt2570 (as of date of this ticket). This kernel rocks. Please note that if you use uvesafb you will need to install the v86d package. See my splashutils page (link is at the left of this page). Enjoy. Note: right now fbsplashd segfaults with suspend2, so hibernation seems broken - I'll have a look later Edit: not reproduced. I tested hibernation and resume, works for me, with the splash. Please do never forget to remove modules that do not resume well. rt2570 (and you will have to stop/start its associated network in suspend2 configuration) is one of them - for me at least. So I persist: enjoy! Mercredi, 26 septembre 2007nfft-3.0.3
The upstream version 3.0.3 of nfft has been packaged, you can get it (i386 only, please contribute) using:

freemat 3.5 is out - I packaged it - quickly, and tested - quickly. Please inform me in case it does not work.

linux-2.6.22-kamikaze5 Posté par Jean-Damien Durand

My previous version using kamikaze4 patchset was wrong, it had both vesafb-tng and uvesafb in the kernel. I have compiled 2.6.22's kamikaze5 patchset with only spock's uvesafb in the kernel. And indeed, splashutils works fine. So this mean uvesafb is ok.
You will need to install v86d package if you wish to use the uvesafb video driver. Uploaded to: ## Search for "*kamikaze5*" If you want to compile yourself you might want to do manually two other changes to the patchset (to be done also if you download my linux-source package): 1. If you compile ipw3945 net driver, then add EXTRA_CFLAGS += -DIPW3945_COMPAT=1 in drivers/net/wireless/Makefile 2. If you compile oss sound modules, then remove any *_syms.o in sound/oss/Makefile Dimanche, 29 juillet 2007

2.6.22's linux is out since enough days to have a stable patchset. This time, the only candidate suitable for me seems to be the kamikaze patchset: it contains in particular suspend2, gentoo's gensplash, the new uvesafb.
Uploaded to: deb http://jeandamiendurand.free.fr/debian/kernel sid main If you want to use vesafb then you'll need the uvesafb's v86d helper: deb http://jeandamiendurand.free.fr/debian/v86d sid contrib Works well for me (I observed sometimes a hang at boot but I do not know if it is because of uvesafb), enjoy. With uvesafb. Note: I found two errors in the patchset: the kernel extension in the top Makefile is kamikaze3 instead of kamikaze4, and the sound/oss/Makefile patch should be reverted. Just in case you would like to compile it yourself - who knows. EDIT: say CONFIG_FB_UVESA=y instead of m -; v86d rwill then start automatically. EDIT2: Oups, I compiled both vesafb-tng and uvesafb in the kernel. this must not be like that. One or the other. I am doing another build using kamikaze5 patchset. With uvesafb. Sadly, the linux beyond patchset is discontinued. The only thing that comes truely to my mind is to yell enormous thanks to its author, iphitus! Thank you, really, your patchset made it for a lot of people.

A quick note, that a lot of people already have done, but well I did not up to now: how to install a local DNS cache. The culprit: I know nothing about that, but wants to speed up lookups that usually go via my ISP name servers.
apt-get install bind9

I use to run linux kernel with patches - and I particularly like the beyond patchset. Although totally unneeded, I use to compile this patched kernel with almost everything (inside for some, as modules for the majority). That's why I thought it might be useful for you; here it is with some additional kernel modules, i386 platform:
# I have to say that suspend2 worked on my old laptop (which is now broken, oups), and not on my current desktop. Don't know why, I never really investigated.
